Our arithmetic, at Western Power's 240 V standard supply for the power points and the chargers' rated power otherwise. A three-phase charger on a single-phase home charges at about 7 kW at most. Checked 5 October 2026.
Charging cost on Synergy's prices
Synergy rates for EV charging
| Plan and time | Cents per unit | 36 kWh into the battery (7 kW charger) |
|---|---|---|
| Synergy Home Plan (A1) | 33.2621 | $12.88 |
| Synergy EV Add On, overnight 11pm–6am | 19.9172 | $7.71 |

Synergy's published prices from 1 July 2026, including GST. The 2c solar figure is the DEBS buy-back you give up by charging from your own panels outside 3pm–9pm; on REBS (older solar systems) Synergy pays 7.135c; enter that instead. Both buy-back rates are effective from 1 July 2025. The EV Add On is for customers with an electric vehicle registered to the home address, and needs an advanced (AMI) meter, so it's only offered where Western Power has them. Costs are our arithmetic with 7% losses. Checked 5 October 2026.
Before you install a wall charger
- Check your car's AC charging limit: a 22 kW charger won't charge a car limited to 11 kW any faster
- Western Power names a 7 kW single-phase charger as permitted on a standard connection
- For EV charging, Western Power requires the main switch to be a circuit breaker, which can mean switchboard work
- A licensed electrical contractor installs the charger on its own circuit and checks the home's maximum demand and supply before adding the load

Common questions
Does charging from a power point waste more electricity?
Yes. In tests published in August 2026, the German motoring club ADAC measured losses of 12.7% to 24.2% on a household socket and 5.1% to 7.0% on an 11 kW wallbox. The calculator starts at 15% for power points and 7% for wall chargers; you can change them.
