The short answer

Web X Electricians in Perth publishes $160 including GST to replace a standard light switch or power point, and $250 to $400 for a new one in a new position. Powerforce Electrical in Perth lists a new power point on a double brick cavity wall at $240 including GST, and $200 for each one after that. A new point costs more than a swap because of the cable run, and several points in one visit cost less each than one at a time. See electrician call-out fees for how minimum charges work.

Power point installation and replacement prices in WA

No Busselton or South West electrician we checked publishes these prices, so these are what Perth electricians and one cost guide publish. Treat them as a guide to what's normal, not a quote.

Dimmers need to suit the lights on the circuit, so mention the bulbs or downlights you have. For a full lighting change, see the LED downlight installation cost guide.

What changes the price

  • New position or replacement. A new or moved point needs a cable run from existing wiring; a swap uses what's there.
  • The wall. Powerforce charges $240 on a double brick cavity wall, $280 on a single brick wall with the cable in conduit on the other side, and $360 with the cable chased into single brick.
  • Roof access. Powerforce's prices assume a single-storey home with easy access to the roof space; a two-storey home or tight roof can cost more.
  • Safety switch protection. If the circuit isn't already protected by a safety switch (RCD), expect a quote for one as well.
  • The fitting. Standard Clipsal or HPM plates are the base price; designer, USB, smart and weatherproof fittings cost more.
  • Travel. These are Perth prices. Ask whether travel to your Busselton, Vasse or Dunsborough address is included.

Who can replace a light switch or power point in WA

Only a licensed electrician. Building and Energy says damaged switches, power points and fittings must be replaced, but "you should never replace fittings and switches yourself", and to use a licensed electrical contractor. It's illegal in WA for an unlicensed person to carry out electrical work. When painting, leave the switch plates on: there are live wires behind them even with the switch off.

For a new or moved power point, the contractor must give you an Electrical Safety Certificate within 28 days. Maintenance work and like-for-like replacements are excluded, so for a straight swap ask whether one will be issued. See the Electrical Safety Certificate in WA.

Before you ask for a quote

  • List each switch and power point, room by room, and whether it's a swap or a new position
  • For a new point, say how far it is from an existing one, and the wall type if you know it
  • Mention USB, outdoor, dimmer or smart fittings, and whether you're supplying them
  • Add any other small jobs, so they share one visit; see home electrical work

Common questions

How much does it cost to replace just one light switch?

Web X Electricians in Perth publishes a fixed $160 including GST, with no call-out fee. Powerforce Electrical in Perth lists a light switch replacement, supplied and installed, at $40, but only alongside other work; on its own it adds its $110 call-out, which by our arithmetic is $40 + $110 = $150 including GST (checked 5 November 2026). If you have more than one to change, list them together.

How much does it cost to move a power point?

None of the electricians we checked publishes a separate price for moving one. Moving a point means running cable to the new position, so the nearest published prices are for a new point: Web X's $250 to $400 and Powerforce's $240, both including GST.

Does adding a power point mean adding a safety switch?

Sometimes. Powerforce's prices assume the circuit is already protected by an RCD, and it quotes one at extra cost if it isn't. Building and Energy says the rule requiring RCDs on every circuit applies to homes built after 1 January 2019, not existing homes, although homes being sold, rented or hired need at least two.
