The short answer

Candela Electrical in Perth publishes $1,350 to $1,650 to supply and install a straightforward 7 kW charger, $1,750 to $2,400 for a solar-smart 7 kW charger and $2,450 to $3,600 for a three-phase 11 to 22 kW charger, all including GST (checked 12 October 2026). The extras that push the price up are switchboard work ($350 to $1,600), cable runs over 10 m ($22 to $38 a metre) and trenching. Most homes don't need three-phase: Western Power allows a 7 kW charger on a single-phase supply.

Published EV charger installation prices

No Busselton electrician we checked publishes EV charger prices, so these are from Perth. The first three rows are Candela Electrical's supply-and-install tiers; What's The Damage's low, typical and high figures give a second view.

Prices as published, checked 12 October 2026. Candela's page is titled 2026 and says its tier prices include the charger, a dedicated circuit, the RCD, mounting, testing and the certificate. What's The Damage's Perth figures were updated October 2026. Busselton jobs can differ with travel and site conditions.

If you've already bought a charger, Candela says install-only is priced on labour and materials, so it costs less than these tiers. See EV charger installation for choosing between 7 kW, three-phase and solar-smart chargers.

The extras that change the total

A charger on the garage wall a few metres from the switchboard is the cheap end. Candela publishes these add-ons for when a site needs more:

The switchboard

A charger needs its own circuit and protection, so the board needs room and spare capacity. An older board with ceramic fuses usually needs upgrading first. See the switchboard upgrade cost guide for published prices.

The cable run

On many Busselton blocks the carport or a detached garage is well away from the meter box. Every metre past the first 10 adds cost, and running under paving or a driveway adds trenching.

The main switch

Western Power's rules say that for an EV charging connection, the main switch must be a circuit breaker. On an older board that can mean changing it.

Do you need three-phase power?

Usually not. Western Power's standard connection for a home is 63 amps on a single-phase supply or 32 amps per phase on three-phase, and it says a 7 kW charger is permitted on either. The electrical contractor has to confirm the home's total load stays within those limits with the charger added.

If it doesn't, the options are to apply to Western Power for a bigger connection, or to use a smart charger that limits how much it draws when the house is busy. Changing to three-phase costs Western Power's fee on top of the electrician's work and takes weeks. The single-phase vs three-phase guide explains when it's worth it.

What charging at home costs to run

Synergy's EV Add On gives an overnight rate of 19.9172 cents a unit (kWh) from 11pm to 6am, including GST, from 1 July 2026. Its Midday Saver and EV Add On super off-peak rate, 9am to 3pm, is 8.852 cents. The standard Home Plan (A1) rate is 33.2621 cents at any time.

Synergy says the EV Add On is for residential customers with a plug-in vehicle registered at the address, in the account holder's name, and needs a time-of-use or advanced meter. Hybrids that don't plug in aren't eligible.

To work out your own numbers, use the EV home charging calculator. If you have solar, a solar-smart charger can use daytime power you'd otherwise export for a few cents.

Getting a quote you can compare

  • Your car's make and model, and its maximum AC charging rate
  • The charger make and model, or whether you want one supplied
  • Where you park and the distance to the switchboard, with a photo of each
  • Whether the cable would cross paving, a driveway or a garden
  • Whether you have solar or a battery, and the inverter brand

Ask each quote to say what's included: the dedicated circuit, the RCD, any switchboard work, the cable length allowed, and testing. WA Consumer Protection says a quote is a total price that becomes binding when you accept it, whereas an estimate can change. In WA, the electrical contractor must give you an Electrical Safety Certificate within 28 days of finishing the job.

Common questions

How much does it cost to install an EV charger at home in WA?

Candela Electrical in Perth publishes $1,350 to $1,650 to supply and install a straightforward 7 kW charger, including GST (checked 12 October 2026). Solar-smart chargers run $1,750 to $2,400 and three-phase chargers $2,450 to $3,600. Switchboard work, long cable runs and trenching add to that.

Is it cheaper if I buy the charger myself?

The installation part is cheaper because you're only paying for labour and materials, but you pay for the charger separately. Check with the electrician that the model suits your car and switchboard before you buy.

Do I need a switchboard upgrade for an EV charger?

Not always. The board needs room for a new circuit and spare capacity, and Western Power requires the main switch to be a circuit breaker for EV charging. Older boards with ceramic fuses usually need upgrading. Candela publishes $850 to $1,600 for an older board upgrade with RCD compliance. See switchboard upgrades.

Can I charge my EV from a normal power point?

Yes, with the cable that comes with most cars, but it's slow. A 7 kW wall charger is much faster and has its own circuit. If you'll use a power point every night, have the circuit checked. See EV charger installation.

What's the cheapest time to charge an EV in WA?

On Synergy's prices from 1 July 2026, the cheapest is 9am to 3pm at 8.852 cents a unit on the Midday Saver or EV Add On. The EV Add On's overnight rate, 11pm to 6am, is 19.9172 cents. Both include GST.
